matrix

I'm writing this short post to explain my move to matrix

I'm moving to matrix because:

  • It's private
  • It's decentralised
  • It's free(dom)
  • It's good enough

Technically matrix is not a chat app, but a secure messaging protocol. Matrix defines how messages are sent between devices, but it does not concern itself with the graphical interface of an actual chat application. That is handled by a client.

Matrix: a protocol

Client: an application which uses the Matrix protocol, e.g. Element

Basically how to 'use matrix' (literally not actually more complicated than any other chat app):

  1. Install element (avaiable for desktop and mobile - it's cross platform)
  2. Make a matrix account. You will want to use the matrix.org homeserver probably (these are like bluesky handles or email addresses)
  3. Join rooms

Matrix chatrooms are a bit like a weird mix between whatsapp (ew) and discord. You have regular rooms which are like whatsapp groups or discord group dms, but then you also have spaces, which are collections of rooms, which are like whatsapp communities (ew), or discord servers.

yeah i copied that post metadata from yesterday. This isn't a valuable blog post but i need that green ahh github activity grid

Today i set up copyparty on my samsung a3 running android 8. Termux and copyparty are just unreasonably good.

I still have to handle adding some accounts for people who i want to add, and working out how it does hashes, etc etc. But I think this helps serve a signle, pretty cool point.

Copyparty is just insanely feature rich.

Take a look at their readme.

Looks reasonable, right? Well take a look at the right. That thicc ahh super massive scroll bar. Copyparty has a lot of features.

If you have the Refined GitHub browser extension installed, you will also see that it's 7 years old.

###### why do i have to convert that img tag format to a ![](...) format all the time.. :\

Also, the guy said he spent much of his time on a bus coding copyparty on the way to work or smth. I guess that shows the power of termux (& vim)

Here's the official copyparty youtube video: https://youtube.com/watch?v=15_-hgsX2V0

uh well it looks like i screwed up the metadata. oops
